A virtuoso is an individual who possesses outstanding talent and technical ability in a particular art or field. The field of virology has been around since at least 1892 when scientists D. Ivanovsky and M. Beijerinck were working on a disease of plants named tobacco mosaic virus. While most scientists hypothesized that all disease was caused by bacteria, these researchers were able to use microscopic filters to show when all bacteria were removed from the infected plant sap, the disease was still able to transmit. Visionaries such as Ivanovsky are needed to ask the difficult questions about our surroundings that lead to new discoveries in the world around us. Won't you become a virus vituoso and help us stop the spread of disease?
